THEN   1980- 2005

Thinking back, it is hard to believe that for so many years faithful customers paid my husband and me to go on an outdoor ADVENTURE! We canoed, kayaked, climbed, caved, hiked and camped throughout North, South and Central America.

Webster’s dictionary defines    ‘adventure’ as an activity with an uncertain outcome.

Yes indeed. For 30 years, customers signed up with our company, the Mountain Workshop Inc, believing they would be kept safe as we tried to minimize the unexpected, but still allow for a chance to be transported by the beauty of nature and the thrill of outdoor living. Ah, then the close calls to brag about later… around the campfire.

Customers became friends, then friends became guides in our organization… such a family, such a tribe, such a business! Most of those working years we slept on the ground, invigorated by rugged living… professional campers.

After we sold the biz, we bought the boat of our dreams so we could sail away forever… sleeping on ocean, river, bay, lagoon.

But the last decade of financial depression changed our plan, we couldn’t retire yet! Luckily it was natural and fun to host sailing charters on our sea chariot called ‘Surprise’, cruising from Maine to the Bahamas every year. Sail Surprise Inc was launched in 2006.

Living on the water is in every sense a TRUE adventure, for when you deal with weather at sea you are dealing with an uncertain outcome. When sailing hard or battened down surviving a storm, experiencing the raw elements of wind and wave becomes a lifetime memory! And we are still running charters…

NOW  2016 til whenever

The boat sold, so now we get to sleep on 4 sparkling silver-rimmed rubber tires mounted on our new (for us) 1988 Ford Camper Van!! As we trek around the nation we will learn all about  ‘boon-docking’ which is free camping allowed at BLM lands and Army Corp sites. Remote and gorgeous. More likely we will be ‘friend-docking’ as we go visit all those friends who insisted we come visit them someday…

Oregon Trail here we come!
